Cardboard People Release LATEST SINGLE “Faster”
BY OLIVIA LEON
Bay area alt-pop group Cardboard People are a band sure to blow up. Consisting of Yunoka Berry, Jim Greer, Rhonda Kinard, and Genesis Valentine, the band showcases an array of styles across their discography. Their most recent single “Faster” paints a soundscape reminiscent of 80’s synthwave pop, glimmering with catchy verses and energetic choruses sure to get stuck in your head.
Before you even press play, the single’s cover art gives you just a taste of what is to come. Dressed up in drawings of disco balls left and right, the art encapsulates this truly dance-worthy track. So be prepared to jump to your feet, bounce around, and put this song on full blast.
“Faster” encapsulates everything that the title entails and more. Its upbeat instrumentals start from the very first second leading you into a quickly moving riff that feels like you’re moving faster and faster — each note like running up neon colored stairs in a retro video game. As Berry’s vocals come in, light and airy, the single is transformed into a complete sensory experience — synths and vocals in perfect compliment, punctuated with drums to get your hands clapping.
“I’m addicted, I can’t help myself / You’re the only one who makes me feel.”
An ode to finding the beauty in new love following heartbreak, the song delves into self exploration and understanding.
Berry speaks to this theme in the band’s music: “I don’t care if you feel like I should sound/look a certain way. This album is exploring people who are often ignored and is meant to prop up people who think outside of the box. Black people often get kept out of pop but this is pop to me, and I’m gonna make pop music whether people like it or not.”
With a debut album in the works,“Faster” is just the first of much more to come, and yet it encapsulates the dynamics the band puts forth in just a single release. From a pop sound that emanates pure joy to honest and relatable storytelling, Cardboard People are far beyond one dimensional.
