Kimbra Plays DC’s 930 Club
BY BRENDA REYES
Kimbra released her fourth studio album, A Reckoning, late January 2023 and is on tour promoting her album with Tei Shi (who also will be releasing a new record later this year). In this era, Kimbra showcases themes about the actions we do to ourselves, with other people, and the environment that surrounds us.
“save me,” which has this omniscient sound, kicks off the show. Red strobe lighting beams through the venue. The audience is ready to embrace the journey of A Reckoning. Kimbra's voice is so velvety and a chameleon of all ranges, she can go straight from a gentle song to an intense pop like in “replay!
In between songs, there would be mini life lesson talks about anything from writing songs to her future children, maturity, and an inside look about the process of her new album. A lot of what she says hits home and it's almost as if a best friend tells you how it is.
She went back into her old discography during the show, and to add just a little bit of umph to "Settle Down," she scat sang its intro, and it became one of my favorite highlights of the night. This song’s meaning has changed for Kimbra over the years, but the song has become a big part of her life and career. The fans will forever embrace her Vows era.
Kimbra gets vulnerable with the crowd when she performs these songs. The layers of playful pop and lyrics that resonate with the fans make Kimbra so relatable. She shows her growth with this album and this is one of key components to a great show. I hope in the future, Kimbra showcases more about her adulthood growth; so the fans can continue to accompany her on life journey with her music.
