The Marías Serenade the 9:30 Club this Valentine’s Day
BY BRENDA REYES
This Monday the 9:30 Club had a special treat for Valentine's Day with The Marías playing a sold out show, and the crowd was certainly ready to be serenaded. Performing their full-length debut album, CINEMA, the duo, composed of lead singer María Zardoya and Josh Conway, was joined by their closest friends Jesse Perlman (guitar), Edward James (keys), and Gabe Steiner (trumpet).
The lights were dimmed red. Red lighting in movies tends to add a sense of danger, but can also enchance passion and romance. And as the set begins, “Calling U Back” is a little bit of both. With “Un Millión” following after, the show branches out into the Spanish pop scene with a catchy favorite even if you don't understand Spanish.
You can see the excitement in artists’ eyes, smiling back at the fans in the crowd, as the band played a bit of Superclean Vol I & II and I Don't Know You. The crowd also heard a cover of “Baby One More Time” by the iconic Britney Spears — definitely a crowd pleaser. A favorite moment of the night was that Maria was indeed serenaded— not by the crowd, but by her fellow band member and partner Josh. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, this was one of the best moments of the night.
María Zardoya mesmerized the whole venue with her dream pop voice as the band played, ending the night with “Hush” and “Carino.” DC will definitely welcome back The Marías with open arms the next time they are here.
Next stop on tour is at Brooklyn Steel in NYC! You can find all the information HERE. And you can catch them touring all winter and spring (INFO HERE).
