Charlotte Day Wilson Performs Sold Out Show at Songbyrd
BY BRENDA REYES
This Sunday, the soulful Charlotte Day Wilson performed a sold out show at D.C.'s Songbyrd. It had been a while since she visited, opening up for Local Natives in 2016. But ever since that show, I've been hooked on her music and excited to see her perform songs from her debut album ALPHA.
ALPHA was released in the summer of 2021 and ALPHA (Deluxe) in December of 2021. The album includes frequent collaborators from BADBADNOTGOOD, Syd (from the band The Internet), and Daniel Caesar. Songs like “I Can Only Whisper” and “Mountains” truly showcase her voice, oozing with soul and a softness to the ears.
On top of her incredible voice Wilson plays the piano, saxophone, and guitar. She truly embodies natural musicality in her veins. Credit is also due to her band for amazing support throughout the show on guitar and drums. Modern jazz-like tempos level up each musical element like the guitar riffs over the neo-soul voice. The solo saxophone section alone wows the crowd with tons of excitement and dropped jaws.
A highlight from the night is that she gifted a bouquet of white flowers to a fan in the crowd, both embracing in a hug— a night that will not be forgotten by the fan. Charlotte ended the set with “Work” from a past EP and my personal favorite “In Your Eyes.” Hopefully she comes back to DC sooner than later.
