Rachel Chinouriri Delves Into New Single “All I Ever Asked”
Singer-songwriter from Croydon, London Rachel Chinouriri talks about her new song “All I Ever Asked,” set to release later today. She explains the meaning behind the track and the inspiration for it.
Hi, Rachel, I’m Aniya. I am very happy to interview you today. It's such a pleasure. I want to ask you some questions about what it's like being an independent artist and your unreleased song “All I Ever Asked.” TikTok has become a huge platform for everyone, especially artists. Do you feel when you post a clip of you saying “Go pre-save my song it’s coming out” on this date — does saying that have a high result?
Absolutely, I have built a friendship group on TikTok who ride for me with whatever I do and anytime I ask for pre-saves, they’ll always do it! I love it so much and they really do mean the world to me.
When you’re writing a song what is the first step that you must do before you record it and publish it?
Be inspired. You can’t start anything without inspiration or a story. You can probably make something, but probably not anything is written with.
Your new song “All I Ever Asked”— how and what was it like during that time when you were writing, singing, going to the studio, and then finishing it?
I was in the countryside with Jamie Lloyd and Glen Roberts. My friend called me and told me of her break up and I was going through my own situation in my relationship. I kind of voiced my feelings through my best friend's situation and the chorus just came to me after texting her. Glen Roberts is a fantastic writer and helped me really piece together the story.
As an artist how do you know when a song or album is finished? What makes it finished?
It’s never truly finished. You just are as happy with it as you can be. There are always things I would change/want to add because it’s about feeling but it depends on how I want to give it to the people. I’m a perfectionist but something in your gut will tell you. It’s like a nervous jump but also my go-to man Dan’s approval gives me the confidence to accept my sound for what it is and put it out!
From “All I Ever Asked” what lyric in the song is the ONE, and why? How does that lyric feel when you were writing and singing it?
“Nothing compares to the trouble that I’ve been through”. I felt pretty devastated making that because internally I really did believe my relationship would work out, but I knew deep down I felt like this for some time and was fearful of ending up like how my friend did… I am now single anyways, but at the time it was gut-wrenching.
What does your day look like when you’re writing music vs when you’re not?
Writing days are always fun. If I'm depressed the day before the studio, I always know I’m about to write a fantastic tune. If not, the studio is FUN! Writing music is FUN. You chit-chat and then turn your emotions into sound so writing days are always fun. When not writing, it's interviewing, being inspired, speaking to my manager, events, planning for the next thing, rehearsals, tour, etc. It’s a lot but I am doing what I love.
Is there any artist that you want to collaborate with?! And who?
Etta Marcus I am in love with her right now. She is the next “it girl” and I love her like my little sister in the industry.
I also see that you’re on tour. Are you excited about that? Will you be adding more shows because I’m trying to be in the crowd, screaming at the top of my lungs!
I am so so excited about the tour. I’ll definitely be doing more tours in the future! I can’t wait to sing at the top of my lungs with you!!!!!!
Thank you, Rachel. I appreciate your time to answer my questions. I hope to see you in the states during your tour!
