The Paper Kites Play DC’s Howard Theater
BY BRENDA REYES
Bre Kennedy opened for The Paper Kites at the historical Howard Theater. She was a wonderful opener who would later join the band for one of their songs. Singer Sam Bently, pointed out the historical significance of the Howard Theater; felt the recognition and appreciation of the beautifully renovated theater in the beginning of the set.
Kicking off the show with St. Clarity and Revelator Eyes, the crowd was captivated by the band with their presence. Bre Kennedy came out to sing Climb on Your Tears with such elegance. A big thanks to the light production making the whole band look like they were all sent from above. Christina Lacy (keyboard) and David Powys (guitar and banjo) especially stood out during this “golden hour.”
Bently told a story about playing in a pub called The Roadhouse in a small Australian town where not a single person knew about the band. So, it gave them a chance to play something with practice before going on tour in the U.S. They played an unreleased song out of the future untitled album that they wrote called Green Valleys.
Bently mention that their new album is done. Soon, fans will be getting to hear new music even though their latest album Roses came out just over a year ago with songs like Without Your Love (played that night at the Howard Theater) and For All You Give. It's nice to hear that new music is on the way to share with their fans.
I would like to point out that Bently is an unapologetic sad/soft boy. Around halfway through the set, he admits that it's okay for everyone to be sad and start crying (only if they want). The band soon breaks into Bloom and it is the point of no return for soft/sad vibes. The harmonization and acoustic style of this song is the perfect formula for a good cry. Again, Powys on the banjo adds that twang to the song.
The set ended with Electric Indigo, which is one of my personal favorites. The encore included Featherstone and Give Me Your Fire, Give Me Your Rain. The Paper Kites gave D.C. a perfect night. Check out other information about future Paper Kites shows here.
