Indie Artist Violet Lewis Releases Her Latest EP— Loose Lips

Indie singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed “moody songstress” Violet Lewis recently released her latest EP titled Loose Lips on January 7. The EP features three pre-released singles, “Augustine,” “Fake Nails,” and “Don’t Say Goodbye,” as well as an entirely new release, “George Orwell.” The EP leans into lighter notes with soft guitars and intimate vocals, giving listeners a look into an emotional soundscape.

The EP falls into an acoustic indie sound that’s unique and vulnerable. Between its lyrics and instrumentals, the track feels reminiscent of indie sounds from 90’s alt-indie band Mazzy Star to modern indie artists such as Beabadoobe. But Loose Lips is evocative of artists ranging across the indie genre, Lewis produces a sound that is purely her own. The artist says, “There are so many amazing people in music. No matter the genre, I always feel like there’s something I can learn from everybody. I honestly feel these days that I’m most inspired by my friends in the music scene who are just always doing cool things and making great music.”

Lewis starts off the EP with her first track titled “Augustine.” From its mellow guitars to quiet drums, the instrumentals fall into perfect balance with the artist’s vocals. Filling in the silences, her lyrics are loud in their poetry and speak to this feeling of a beautiful recklessness in youth and love.

“Sweet nineteen / Will you marry and then divorce me / Cause I'm bored and ran out of new things that won't kill me / But you seem harmless to me / Augustine.”

“Fake Nails,” the second song off the album, continues in harmony with “Augustine,” as its soft instrumentals make for an effortless transition. Lewis’ vocals are raw and honest, pushing listeners into a space that is equal parts emotional and serene. The artist opens up about her music explaining “Before I ever considered myself to be an artist or a songwriter, I was drawn to songwriting for its freedom of honesty and vulnerability. There is no other space in my life where I feel the same freedom to be so open about who I am and what I feel. This has remained a primary part of music to me throughout my life and throughout the writing and recording of Loose Lips.”

Following “Fake Nails,” “Don’t Say Goodbye” leans into this vulnerability within Lewis’ lyrics, as well as instrumentals. The track takes on darker tones than the first, but complements the EP in its acoustics. It pushes a more upbeat rhythm from its bassline and guitar to its drums, fully showcasing the artist’s catchy yet introspective lyrics throughout the song. Lewis delves into the fear of leaving someone— of saying goodbye— to someone you love, a feeling many listeners can likely relate to and identify with.

“I made my therapist cry today / Cause I told her how scared I am to leave you / And she knows all of the other things I've been through / Yeah she knows how much it would hurt for me to lose you.”

The fourth and final track on the EP “George Orwell” is the artist’s new release. It brings listeners back to a quiet, acoustic space, concluding the album on a note reminiscent of good memories, and yet longing for the past.

Reflecting on the EP Lewis says “The positive response has been really exciting! “George Orwell,” which was released with the EP on January 7th, has become my most popular song, and has created some cool opportunities for me.”

Loose Lips cultivates a beautifully reflective collection of songs and marks Violet Lewis as an up and coming artist to look out for.
