This past weekend, Indigo De Souza made her return to Boston and The Royale after nearly two and a half years, touring her fourth album, Precipice, which was released this past July. Indigo has never shied away from deep, dark topics in her lyrics, and this record doesn’t stray far from that. However, it’s noticeably more pop-leaning and upbeat than her previous albums. During the show, she spoke about her desire to write pop music this time around and how the album’s producer, Elliott Kozel, helped her achieve that at the hilariously named “Pee Jar Studios.”
The crowd fully embraced the new pop sound as they danced, sang along, and filled the room with joy and love. The setlist included throwbacks like “Ghost” from I Love My Mom, and “Kill Me” from Any Shape You Take, which, admittedly, she hadn’t played in years after once forgetting the lyrics mid-song. She also brought out her opener and friend, Mothé, onto the stage to play piano during “Heartbreaker” and to perform “Serious,” a song they wrote together the first time they hung out. By the end of the night, the themes of evolution, growth, and self-expression found on Precipice felt present in the Royale, too!
