Dark Pop Artist Fae Guides Us Through Spellbinding New Single “Bad Trip”
Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter Fae is no stranger to exploring powerful and dark themes in her music, and her newest release “Bad Trip” is no exception, diving straight into murky themes of drug use and monotonous madness.
Co-written with Songland’s Miranda Glory, and produced/recorded by Upsahl’s musical director Alex Flagstad, Fae, the alias of Japanese and Jewish east coast native Tanya Negin, has developed a masterful sound that feels equal parts sinister and confessional.
Starting off the track, airy synths and distant ambience are soon upended by booming percussion and Fae’s crisp vocals that spin a tale of living the same day “over and over and over again.”
A feeling nearly universally relatable in a global pandemic, “Bad Trip” deftly blends together relatability and intimacy. Fae’s floaty, angelic harmonies cleverly blend with her signature commanding tone for a track that spirals the listener further and further into madness.
The track follows the earlier releases “Just Another Nightmare” and “Faces,” standing as the fourth single off Fae’s upcoming sophomore EP “false memories” to be released later this year.
The track’s outro relies on floaty vocals from Fae and a hypnotic beat, and rests on the repetition of the line “I know I’ve been here before.” In it, perhaps unintentionally, is a nod to Fae’s position in the pop realm, where she stands poised to become a staple in the world of alt-pop.
